CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its Outdoor Track & Field Performers of the Week on Tuesday, recognizing six standout efforts from four different programs. Virginia led the way with three selections following a record-shattering weekend of competition across the league.
ACC Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
Gary Martin, Virginia, Sr. (Warminster, Pa.)
- Ran the third leg of the Cavaliers’ relay in the college 4xMile championship at the Penn Relays.
- Martin ran a 3:54.94 mile, the fastest split among all competitors.
- Also anchored the Cavaliers’ distance medley relay team, which finished third, clocking a time of 4:10.62 in the 1600-meter leg.
ACC Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week
Jeremiah Nubbe, Virginia, Sr. (Yelm, Wash.)
- Won the college hammer throw championship at the Penn Relays with a personal-best mark of 73.76 meters (242-0).
- His mark ranks second in Virginia history, surpassing his own previous mark.
- The mark ranks sixth nationally and leads the ACC this season.
- Also threw the discus at the Penn Relays, logging a throw of 51.99 meters (170-7).
ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Week
Elsingi Kipruto, Louisville, Fr. (Mosoriot, Kenya)
- Made his collegiate debut in the 5000 meters, clocking a time of 13:32.00 at the Jim Freeman/Clark Wood Invitational.
- His time broke the meet and facility records and ranks fifth in the ACC this season.
- Named ACC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week.
ACC Women’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week
North Carolina Distance Medley Relay Team
Makayla Paige, Sydney Masciarelli, Veja Sjoberg, Delea Martins
- Four members of the Tar Heels’ squad broke the collegiate record in the distance medley relay, posting a blistering 10:36.82 at the Penn Relays.
- Vera Sjoberg anchored the Tar Heels with a 4:26.15 final leg over 1600 meters.
- Sjoberg overtook a Stanford runner on the final lap, winning by one-half step.
- The group was also named the College Track Performance of the Day for the second day of the meet.
ACC Women’s Outdoor Field Athlete & Freshman of the Week
Charlotta Sandkulla, Virginia, Fr. (Vaasa, Finland)
- Won the college hammer throw championship at the Penn Relays, logging a mark of 67.13 meters (220-3).
- Her fifth-round throw was the best mark in the event by more than 20 feet.
- Her mark from the Penn Relays would rank 10th in the nation this season, directly behind her own mark from the Duke Invitational on April 10.
